The mind of a child is like a clean slate. What ever we want to write on that slate; we can write first 5 year of a child’s life is extremely important because maximum growth of his brain takes place during those years. He is just like a sponge who absorbs everything said or done in his immediate environment. In addition to all this every the child has his own soul full of Karmas and Samaskaras carried from previous births. It is those characteristics which distinguish each child, each individual from the otherwise what renders the uniqueness of personality.
Sadly, in the Kaliyug innocence is considered a negative trait. Most of the parents impose dishonesty, cheating, hypocrisy and manipulations on their children right from the beginning. And such training is named as becoming practical to survive in society. Many parents want to fulfill their ownunrealized ambitions through their children. Too much domination, interference from parental side has produced rebellions. Small children and teenagers are seen disrespecting and disobeying their parents and teachers.
As an educationist I strongly fell that each child should be guided gently, given a lot of free space and independence to decide the course of his future. The seed of good moral values is extremely important and helps the firm ground of truth, sincerity, honesty, compassion; one automatically works hard to choose success in life.
“We are only custodians of this soul.”-Swami satyananda.
All parents should keep this teaching of Sri Swamiji in their minds while rearing their child. Since a child has his own set of karmas and samskaras inherited from many previous births, no parent should over impose his views. Need not feel guilty if the child goes off track i.e. falls in bad company or indulges in drugs, liquor or smoking.
