His great love for all, forgiveness and forgetting nature, an air of absolute unconcern nature, the compute detachment was cultivated by rigorous practice of these seemingly simple sadhnas. “What if those things, these books and buildings and activities stay or go away?” He would at times say, “Should you care? If need be we must distribute all these books free to people, if they find it difficult to buy them. This is our mission and duty. Sadhus can have their alms at kshetras.”
The stern spirit of true Sadhuism can be glimpsed here and there in these pages and diaries. One page reveals how he detected attachment by visiting same alms house daily for his Bhiksha and then he started going to 3 different kshetras inturn & getting a couple of Rottis at each place.
One significant para runs: “Sadhuism is a new birth. If big kshettars abuse you, bear that. Do not think of the past life and birth.” Then another, “walk without shoes as far as possible. Hardy life till death is necessary for sadhu.”
Again, “for a month or 15 days leave Swargashram without informing anybody. Take 2 clothes and 1 blanket. Roam about along the banks of the Ganges canal from Hardwar to Meerut. Live on Madhukari. Do not talk with villagers. Observe mouna on these days.
Even for sadhus the attachment & moha is brought along with them, after renunciation. By practicing severe austerities swamiji rooted out traces of attachment; by introspection and self analysis.
The very practice of ‘Give, give and give’ was applied by swamiji by using all donations either in printing leaflets and pamphlets or buying fruit and milk for the sick and old sadhus.
On meditation following pages will throw light of his own practice.
          1.    More time (8 hours) should be spent in meditation and meditation alone, even 12, 16 hours daily.
          2.    Even study and medical treatment should be given up for sometime – pure meditation alone.
          3.    Winter must be well-utilized. That is the best time for meditation.
Other pages revealed – Giving up salt, living on Rotti’s alone, going without umbrella, shoes, and fan. Eat dry Rottis with water to save time for utilizing in meditation.
His teaching, “Do not give tongue what it asks for,” is evident by this page.
         1.    Give up salt
         2.    Give up sugar
         3.    Give up spices
         4.    Give up vegetables
         5.    Give up chillies
         6.    Give up tamarind;
Another page read – “Unless you practice all these things, you cannot become a real sadhu.”
By his own sadhnas he has clearly defined true sadhuism. When a sadhu finds no difference between a boondi ladoo and mud ball, then he becomes a true vedantin.
These pages reveal the depth of his character, his teachings and generosity.
All spiritual aspirants can realize God and attain the highest by practicing and perfecting virtues. His untiring zeal, selflessness, enthusiasm which is revealed through his books did not come by chance or inheritance. Now I fully realize why his teachings though simple pierce the heart of the reader like an arrow which can’t miss its mark.
I bow my head in silent awe and wonderment. This jewel had gone through the most merciless melting, smelting and moulding, drilling, chiseling and feeling.
That was the great guru Sivananda who is still alive in spirit and chiseling lives of millions all over the world by his expert hammer.
