FAMILIARITY BREEDS CONTEMPT

Familiarity breeds contempt promotes worldliness. Every aspirant of the spiritual path must be alert and aware of this malady and try to save himself from being too familiar.

God is the only one who is worthy of being familiar. He is the only most sincere companion; we must seek and aspire for. In the big bad world not even a single person can be, should be trusted and relied upon. The only exception is Sadguru. The company of saints is definitely desirable and sought after, but that too should be limited to the very few. Reason lies in the danger of being misguided, misjudged. A lot of precious time and money is wasted many times in the name of satsang.

Solitude is the best friend with only company of God as His thoughts, name chanting. But it is not easy for a householder aspirant to go into solitude sometimes even once in a day; what to say frequently for many days. So the householder aspirants can enjoy the benefit of solitude by observing ‘Mouna’ for 1 or 2 hours daily. Even if that is not possible, avoid unnecessary talk, long talks. Where ever possible use gestures if communication becomes must. With telephone as an easy means of communication disturbance is far greater than the olden times. Avoid picking up the phone and if you must; then try to be as brief as possible. Disconnect as soon as possible. Be alert about the time and energy which is wasted in futile talk. The phone is in your hand, you have the power to disconnect; keep on reminding yourself. “Speech is a powerful energy which must be converted in to ojas for spiritual development.”- SWAMI SHIVANANDA.

Reinforce this sentence in your mind daily as frequently as possible. This reinforcement becomes much easier if written on the paper and placed at places frequented most e.g. bed side or kitchen. The old habits die hard; you will be tempted to waste this energy and will also end up wasting it. Don’t feel too miserable, take a resolve again. Always remember Swami Satyananda’s words “Failure In keeping the resolve is not a failure in life.” This strong and positive thought will energize you and flood your mind with lot of positivism. The very guilt after wasting your time and energy, forgetting your resolve is the proof that your old bad habit is being uprooted. As its roots are very deep, it will take some time. But if you practice it sincerely as a sadhna, it can’t stay long. Whenever you fail in your attempt, resolve; don’t forget to punish yourself positively. E.g. I will do 2 mala of japa or keep mouna for more time today.

Cut all your connections of the world ruthlessly. For householders, I understand that is not practical and possible, but you can always make a beginning. By using your viveka, first start cutting off those people who are not playing an important role in your family life. There are many people, both friends and relatives who can be easily cut off; if you are alert and aware. When ever you crave for talking to some one, pick up a good book that may be religious according to your own faith or some saint whose writings appeal to your mind. Your own Sadguru is the best person.

Communion with God is the best satsang, a sadhak can do. It is easy at no cost and is available every where and any where you are. Open your heart to him like a child with all the innocence and sincerity. Though initially your lower mind may provoke you against this simple, easy but very powerful method, yet you persevere. Results will be proof enough. Gradually the protests of the lower mind will die their natural death.

O’ dear sadhak time is precious, each second must be valued and utilized in spiritual flight; don’t waste it on worldly people.
