Gradually it has so happened that prayer is done only to fulfil some demands, example “I should pass in my examination” or “My son should get a good job” and so on. During testing times, one prays to god to overcome his miseries. In a nutshell, faith in god has started dwindling. In most families, temples are only meant for prayer and people visit them once in a while and offer Prasad to deities on certain days, example Hanuman Mandir on Tuesday.
Prayer is the simplest and most powerful way of connecting to the supernatural force called by different religions as Allah, Christ, Ganesha, Durga and so on. We are all the children of god. He is our father and mother. He is very very kind and loving. According to Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, “God comes before he is sought. If we extend one hand, he holds our hand with both hands.” Like parents are eager to help their children in the hour of need, so also god is eager to help us. He is only waiting for us to call on him with a pure and longing heart. Due to many pundits, the so called custodians of religion, people have lost whatever little faith they had. In many temples, especially at holy places like Puri, Benares, Gaya and Hardwar, prayer has become entirely commercial. It is disgusting to find pujaris running after the pilgrims for offering puja on their behalf. Money is their only motive. All famous temples have become thriving business houses. People in distress go there, offer a puja of Rs. 101 to Rs. 1 lac, or donate according to their capacities and think that their prayer is over. Result is lowering faith in many cases.
Prayer is much simpler and deeper. God does not want wealth. He can not be pleased with huge donations or big pompous puja ceremonies where the emphasis is more on show and pomp than on god. He can be pleased by the prayer which comes straight from the depth of a devotee’s heart. The epic of Mahabharata rightly depicts it when the Pandava queen Draupadi was insulted by the Kauravas, Shri Krishna came to her rescue.
So let us not consider god only as a wish fulfilling machine and pray only for our demands. Let us all pray to the almighty with a sincere and longing heart for things other than worldly desires. Let u all deepen our faith in his kindness, love and compassion.
Prayer is a very powerful way of connecting with god it is a strong medicine for our depression, worries, tension and so many other mental and physical aliments. The moment we think, “Whatever is done by god is for our good” our mind is set at rest. Let us all revive our ancient culture of chanting mantras, e.g. Gayatri Mantra and Mahamrityunjaya Mantra. Let us read holy books like the Gita, Ramayana and the Vedas daily. In the morning or evening, some time must be set aside to be in communion with god. A seed of spirituality must be sown in the young minds. To reduce the pressure of competition and false prestige, prayer is a must. As life has become very busy these days, a simple prayer which comes straight from the heart must be followed to attain peace and happiness.
